The Importance of AC Fan Coil Maintenance

Evaporator and condensing fan coils are essential parts of your home’s air conditioning system. Therefore, keeping them maintained and cleaned will help your unit operate efficiently and prolong its lifespan. Here’s some helpful information on how to maintain your AC fan coils.

How AC fan coils work

Typical air conditioning systems consist of two units, one inside your home and one outside, each containing coils made of copper or aluminum tubing. Evaporator coils in the indoor unit suck the heat out of the air, while condenser coils in the outside unit release heat into the atmosphere, cooling the air inside your home.

Effects of poorly maintained AC coils

AC coils are tightly wound with fans constantly blowing air over them, which can lead to a buildup of dust, dirt and debris. Dirty coils can lead to the following problems:

  1. Increased operating temperatures. Dirty coils make your air conditioner work harder to absorb and release heat, this increases the operating temperature. The extra heat puts wear on the unit’s components and shortens the lifespan.

  2. Increased humidity. Besides removing heat, the AC coils also reduce humidity levels in the air. Dirty coils mean higher humidity levels and a less comfortable home environment.

  3. Increased energy bills. Dirty coils make your air conditioner work harder and less efficiently, so ignoring them will result in higher energy bills.

  4. More repairs. More stress on the unit’s components will lead to more frequent breakdowns and costly repairs. For example, an overheated unit can lead to a dead compressor, one of the most expensive parts to replace.

The best way to keep your AC unit running clean is to hire a professional HVAC company with technicians who know how to clean the coils correctly and identify and fix minor issues before they become costly repairs.

When you should clean your AC coils

There’s no hard and fast rule for when you should have your AC fan coils cleaned. The amount of dirt accumulating varies from things like the frequency of use and the air quality in and outside of your home.

We recommend you get your unit professionally inspected, serviced and cleaned once a year in the spring. This way it’s ready for summer, when you need it.
